Why Pilates? The Pilates emphasis on core strength and flexibility make it beneficial for just about everyone! Core strength (integrating abdominal, back and shoulder girdle muscles) is important for most movement, from taking the groceries out of the car to sports performance. Your Pilates workout can be customized for your goals whether you are regaining strength and flexibility after inactivity or an injury, looking to improve your golf game, or just want to look and feel better. What if I’m not in good shape? You don’t need the strength and flexibility of an athlete to reap the benefits of Pilates. The exercises are progressive and can be modified to challenge any level. If you haven’t exercised in a while, your instructor will guide you through progressions that are appropriate for your individual body. What if I have an injury or health problems? Pilates exercises can be adapted for many conditions. Increasingly, doctors and therapists are recommending Pilates to their patients. Correctly performed and carefully selected exercises can be very beneficial for increasing strength, flexibility, coordination and control which are frequently adversely affected by injury and other health conditions. Since inappropriate and/or incorrectly performed exercise can aggravate many conditions, it is very important to have experienced and knowledgeable instructors to guide you. I’ve done Pilates at the gym. What’s the difference here? Concentration and control are central principles of Pilates and greatly enhance its benefits. Often in a large group class, the instructor cannot give you individual attention you need to perform the exercises correctly or make modifications you may need. At our Pilates Center we offer private and small group sessions. Since our groups are small, our instructors can focus on your form and make corrections. We also use Pilates apparatus to enable you to recruit, strengthen and stretch your muscles in unique ways. What is Pilates apparatus? Pilates apparatus is specialized equipment originally designed by Joseph Pilates. Use of the apparatus adds variety and challenge to increase core control and conditioning. Work on the apparatus adds hundreds of new exercises to basic mat Pilates. With the apparatus your instructor can make an exercise more challenging or make modifications you may need to help you perform an exercise. Do men do Pilates? Definitely. Pilates core strengthening makes it a great addition to any conditioning program including golf, tennis, soccer, and sports conditioning. Professional sports teams, universities and colleges are beginning to use Pilates exercises and apparatus in their conditioning programs. Will Pilates get rid of my belly? Pilates can tone your abdominal musculature, firming up weak muscles. You’ll burn some calories with Pilates but if your belly is from excess fat, you’ll need to follow a sensible diet in addition to exercising. Is Pilates for all ages? The versatility of Pilates makes it great for conditioning at just about any age. We have experience in teaching people from teens to nineties. What about back pain? Many people report a decrease in pain after consistently performing Pilates over time. Appropriately selected and correctly performed Pilates exercises strengthen the core muscles involved in stabilizing the spine, which may help alleviate some types of back pain. |
